Please be advised that ALL return envelopes provided to this Consulate must be self-addressed. This means that you must write your own name and address as the sender as well as the receiver.
Even though the envelope you provide will be mailed from our office, the Consulate’s name and address should NOT be written anywhere on the return label and envelope.
Due to numerous delivery problems incurred by the mail couriers, this office will no longer be able to accept return envelopes that are not properly self-addressed by the applicant.
Envelopes that are not self-addressed as indicated above will be returned to the applicant.

As of October 11th, 2017 visa applicants may complete their visa application online directly through a new system called “E@pplication”.
Applicants may complete the request form online, which will then need to be printed out and presented personally to this Consulate on the day of your appointment – accompanied by all requested supported documentation and to be signed in the presence of the Visa Officer.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING APPOINTMENTS
The Consulate of Italy in Detroit wishes to remind all users that the booking system “Prenot@mi” is entirely FREE OF CHARGE. Users will never be asked to pay any fee in order to book an appointment at the Consulate.
We would advise all applicants to beware of third party agencies and/or individuals claiming to be able to book an early appointment on your behalf, provided that you pay a fee for their services.
The Consulate wishes to stress that there is no connection or affiliation between the Consulate itself and any such websites, agencies or individuals and reserves its right to take action where appropriate.
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR ALL VISA APPLICANTS
By law, the Consulate may only issue visas to individuals resident in the consular jurisdiction.
The Consular jurisdiction is Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee. All individuals resident in these states must apply for visas through this office.
Students are considered resident at their universities or their home addresses. If either one is in our jurisdiction, they may apply here.
Important notice for Schengen Visa applicants: no visa can be affixed on passports older than 10 years (e.g. in 2016 we cannot accept passports issued before 2006).
Holders of one of the following documents, issued by the American immigration authorities, are eligible to apply for a visa, providing that their documents are valid at least three months beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen territory:
- U.S. Passport;
- Foreign passport and U.S. Permanent Resident Card (formerly Green Card);
- Valid International Student visas and valid re-entry (“travel”) signature on I-20;
- Valid Exchange visitors visas and DS-2019;
- Long-term U.S. visas (e.g. L1, L2, H1, H2, R1 etc.);
- U.S. Re-entry Permit;
- U.S. Refugee Travel Document (Document de Voyage de Réfugiés);
- Holders of B1/B2 visas may only apply for Airport Transit visa;
- VISAS will be issued in about 7-15 days.

Passports must be valid at least 3-6 months beyond the date of your return to the United States. Passports must contain at least two blank pages for the visa sticker.

All applicants are required to sign the application form in front of an Italian Consular agent.
Applicants requesting a Visa National (Long stay, Type D) Visa Application (more than 90 days), for whom the Visa Office does not need to acquire the fingerprints, can sign the application form in one of our Dependent Consular Offices.
