The Codice Fiscale is the alphanumeric code issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate to identify Italian or foreign individuals interacting with public administrations, other private individuals and Italian entities. For private citizens, the Codice Fiscale is determined on the basis of personal data.
- What is it for?
Any administrative procedure (payment of taxes, duties, fees, etc.) or business activity (acceptance of inheritance, contracts with public or private entities, request for financing, sponsorships, leases or loans for use of real estate, etc.) requires the Codice Fiscale of the person carrying it out.
- How to submit the request
Please read the instructions below carefully before proceeding with the request.
A. ITALIAN CITIZENS RESIDENT ABROAD REGISTERED WITH AIRE IN OUR CONSULAR DISTRICT
Adult Italian citizens registered with AIRE can request the Codice Fiscale, for themselves and for their minor children, through the Fast-it online portal and following the instructions. It will also be possible to download the Codice Fiscale attestation through the Fast-it portal once the application has been processed. In this case, the Consulate will not need to intervene to issue the certificate.
How?
- Register on the Fast It Portal or log in if you already have an active account;
- Click on “Consular Registry and AIRE” and then on “Codice Fiscale Assignment”;
- Confirm the data and start the request;
- As soon as the application has been processed by the Consulate, you will be able to download the Codice Fiscale attestation certificate for yourself and any minor children for whom the request was successful.
If you are unable to download the Codice Fiscale attribution certificate:
- Request the “Online Association” by clicking on “Consular Registry and AIRE” and then on “View your personal data sheet”;
- You will then receive a message in your mailbox confirming the association.
- Log in to the portal again and download the certificate.
B.1. FOREIGN CITIZENS NOT RESIDENT IN ITALY BUT RESIDENT IN OUR CONSULAR DISTRICT
Foreign citizens not resident in Italy must delegate a person to submit the Codice Fiscale request form directly to any office of the Agenzia delle Entrate located in Italy, pursuant to art. 1 of the Ministerial Decree. implementing Decree 17 May 2001, no. 281.
The addresses of the Agenzia delle Entrate offices can be found on the website www.agenziaentrate.it
Foreign citizens can request the Codice Fiscale to the Italian Consular Office of his/her consular district only in those cases where the Codice Fiscale is necessary for online procedures and/or in case the foreigner is unable to delegate a representative to make the request to the Agenzia delle Entrate.
In such cases the Consular Office will forward the request to the Agenzia delle Entrate in Italy.
B.2. HOW TO SUBMIT THE APPLICATION FOR A CODICE FISCALE TO THE CONSULAR OFFICE
This service of the Consular Office is free of charge and is available to private individuals who reside in this Consulate’s consular jurisdiction.
- Processing a request can take up to 15 days, once all the required documentation has been received;
- Each individual applicant must submit his or her individual set of documents via mail as listed below.
To request a Codice Fiscale, applicants must send:
– Request Form completely filled out, with a note indicating the reasons for the codice fiscale request;
– If the applicant’s current name is different from the name at birth, copy of the birth certificate;
– Copy of a current Italian or foreign passport;
– Copy of an ID showing the residence address (or a current bill);
– Self-addressed, prepaid envelope for the restitution of the codice fiscale certificate.
Note: The complete name on the passport must match the name indicated on the birth certificate of the applicant. If that is not the case, the applicant will need to submit a name change decree or solve the discrepancy before applying for the codice fiscale.
For requests on behalf of minor children, a parent must fill out the application form with the minor’s information, but he/she will need to sign the request form. Additionally, the following documents will need to be included:
– Copy of the passport of the parent;
– Copy of the codice fiscale of the parent.

C. OTHER CATEGORIES
Students who need a Codice Fiscale for pre-enrollment at the university can obtain one on the UNIVERSITALY Portal during the pre-enrollment application. The Codice Fiscale can also be assigned:
- at the Immigration One-Stop Window or by the Questura when requesting a residence permit for non-EU students; OR
- by the Agenzia delle Entrate by submitting form AA4/8, for EU students.
Foreign citizens who need a Codice Fiscale for the purchase of real estate or for other commercial/financial activities in Italy, can delegate their representative to request a Codice Fiscale from the Agenzia delle Entrate on their behalf (see above, SUB B1).
For citizens of non-EU countries who intend to stay in Italy, the Codice Fiscale is assigned:
– by the Immigration One-Stop Window, located in each Prefecture and responsible for issuing the entry permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) to foreign citizens who request a residence permit for employment or family reunification;
– from the Questura or State Police office, for foreign citizens who request other types of residence permits.
Citizens of EU countries who intend to stay in Italy can request the Codice Fiscale by submitting the AA4/8 form to a territorial office of the Agenzia delle Entrate. The request must be motivated and accompanied by a valid document (passport or identity card valid for expatriation).
A foreign citizen who needs the Codice Fiscale to start legal proceedings in Italy can submit the request through a third party with power of attorney to one of the Agenzia delle Entrate offices whose addresses can be found on the website www.agenziaentrate.it
