Italian Citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<h1 class=\"entry-title h3\"><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\" data-start=\"64\" data-end=\"94\">The declaration of re-acquisition by a former Italian citizen can be submitted between July 1, 2025, and December 31, 2027.<\/strong><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p data-start=\"64\" data-end=\"364\"><strong data-start=\"64\" data-end=\"94\">Law No. 74 of May 23, 2025<\/strong>, converting Decree Law 36\/2025, amended\u00a0<strong data-start=\"135\" data-end=\"182\">Article 17, paragraph 1, of Law No. 91\/1992<\/strong>, allowing former Italian citizens, including those residing abroad, in certain cases and for a limited time period, to\u00a0<strong data-start=\"302\" data-end=\"363\">reacquire Italian citizenship by submitting a declaration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"366\" data-end=\"470\"><strong>WHO CAN REQUEST IT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"366\" data-end=\"470\">The\u00a0<strong data-start=\"370\" data-end=\"421\">new Article 17, paragraph 1, of Law No. 91\/1992<\/strong>\u00a0applies when the following requirements are met:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The applicant must have been\u00a0<strong data-start=\"503\" data-end=\"520\">born in Italy<\/strong>\u00a0or have been\u00a0<strong data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"590\">resident in Italy for at least two consecutive years<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>The applicant must have\u00a0<strong data-start=\"618\" data-end=\"676\">lost Italian citizenship no later than August 15, 1992<\/strong>, in one of the following cases:\n<ul>\n<li>Voluntarily acquired a foreign citizenship no later than August 15, 1992, and established residence abroad\u00a0(articolo 8, numero 1\u00b0, della legge n. 555\/1912);<\/li>\n<li>Having automatically acquired a foreign citizenship (not by their own choice), they\u00a0renounced Italian citizenship and established residence abroad\u00a0(articolo 8, numero 2\u00b0, della legge n. 555\/1912);<\/li>\n<li>Was a minor child (not emancipated) of someone who lost citizenship,\u00a0shared residence with the parent, and acquired the citizenship of a foreign state\u00a0(articolo 12 della legge n. 555\/1912).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>WHO CANNOT REQUEST IT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new Article 17, paragraph 1, of Law No. 91\/1992\u00a0<strong>does NOT apply to<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Former citizens\u00a0born abroad who have not resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years;<\/li>\n<li>Those who lost citizenship after August 15, 1992\u00a0(for any reason);<\/li>\n<li>Those who lost citizenship under\u00a0articolo 8, numero 3\u00b0\u00a0(i.e., anyone who, \u201chaving accepted employment with a foreign government or entered military service for a foreign power, persisted in such service despite the Italian government\u2019s order to leave such employment or service within a specified time\u201d);<\/li>\n<li>Those who did not exercise the option\u00a0provided by\u00a0articolo 5, secondo comma, della legge n. 123\/1983\u00a0(a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1900\" data-end=\"1915\">minor child<\/strong>, including adopted, of an Italian father or mother who, in case of dual citizenship, could choose one citizenship within one year of reaching the age of majority).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>DOCUMENTS TO SUBMIT<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Valid Passaport<\/li>\n<li>US Driver License<\/li>\n<li>Current Utility bill<\/li>\n<li>Birth Certificate\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If born in Italy<\/strong>: Original certificate issued by the Vital Recors office of the city of birth<\/li>\n<li><strong>If born abroad<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>if born in the USA: original certificate, with an Apostille and Italian translation<\/li>\n<li>if born in a different country: original certificate, with Apostille and Italian translation certified by the Italian Embassy or Consulate that is competent for the country of birth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>A historical citizenship certificate issued by the Vital Records office in the Italian city of last residence<\/li>\n<li><strong>Only for applicants born abroad<\/strong>: a historical residence certificate issued by the relevant Italian Municipality showing at least two consecutive years of residence in Italy<\/li>\n<li>Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship, in original (it will be returned) and a photocopy.<br \/>\n(For proof of naturalization in another country, please consult the instruction on the relevant Italian Consulate website)<\/li>\n<li>If applicable, documentation proving other citizenships<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>CONSULAR FEE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the day of the appointment, the applicant must pay the consular fee of $293. The payment can be completed with a money order made out to the &#8220;Consulate of Italy in Detroit&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PROCEDURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Send an email to the Consulate to the address <a href=\"mailto:detroit.cittadinanza@esteri.it\"><strong>detroit.cittadinanza@esteri.it<\/strong><\/a> to share a scanned copy of the documentation and request an appointment.<\/p>\n<p>The Consulate, once the documentation is deemed complete, will make sure to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The applicant will need to come in person to the Consulate on the day of the appointment with all the required, original documents to confirm and sign a declaration to reacquire Italian citizenship status.<\/p>\n<p>Once the documents are verified and in order, the Consulate will prepare a confirmation document and register it with the relevant Italian city offices.<\/p>\n<p>The applicant will receive an email once the process is successfully completed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EFFECTS OF THE REACQUISITION OF ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reacquisition of Italian citizenship<strong> does not<\/strong> have retroactive effects.<\/p>\n<p>Children and spouses of the people who reacquire Italian citizenship <strong>DO NOT REACQUIRE, NOR ACQUIRE<\/strong> Italian citizenship automatically.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The declaration of re-acquisition by a former Italian citizen can be submitted between July 1, 2025, and December 31, 2027.
