Even if you already hold an Italian passport, when expiring, you must follow the instructions for the issuance of a new passport.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the issuance of an Italian passport, Italian citizens need to\u00a0<strong>already<\/strong>\u00a0be registered in our Registry of Italians Residing Abroad (AIRE). Citizens who are older than 12\u00a0<strong>need<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to schedule an appointment on the\u00a0<strong>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prenot@mi<\/a>&#8221; website<\/strong>\u00a0(click on &#8216;EN&#8217; on the top right corner for the English version) and come to the Consulate to\u00a0<strong>submit\u00a0their request<\/strong>\u00a0and for\u00a0<strong>the acquisition of their fingerprints<\/strong>. For further details and for information on the documents to submit on the day of the appointment, please refer to the instructions below.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Who can apply for a passport<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Digital fingerprinting<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Documents to submit and booking your appointment<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Issuance of a passport for a minor<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cost and payment method<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Stolen or lost passport<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Letter of consent for minors<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0<a name=\"Who\"><\/a><strong>WHO CAN APPLY FOR A PASSPORT<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To be able to request a passport through this office you must already have been granted Italian citizenship, either at birth or following a request for citizenship recognition. (For information on how to request Italian citizenship, please\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consdetroit.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/\"><strong>visit the Citizenship page<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of this Consulate website).<\/li>\n<li>Italian citizens residing\u00a0for at least 6 months per year\u00a0in this Consular jurisdiction must\u00a0already have submitted\u00a0an AIRE\u00a0registration request to this Consulate\u00a0BEFORE\u00a0scheduling a passport appointment. This also applies to citizens currently registered in AIRE who were previously registered at another Consulate who satisfy the residency requirement. To register in the AIRE registry through this Consulate, visit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consdetroit.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/anagrafe-degli-italiani-residenti-allestero-aire\/\"><strong>Registry \u2013 AIRE page of this website<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0AIRE registration is a legal obligation of all Italian citizens (art. 6 of law 470\/1988) and is required for passport issuance abroad.<\/li>\n<li>By law, passport applications should be submitted to the issuing office in whose jurisdiction the citizen resides. If a passport request is submitted to an office in whose jurisdiction one does not reside, the request will incur a longer processing time in order to obtain the necessary authorization from the competent Questura\/Consulate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2.\u00a0<a name=\"fingerprinting\"><\/a><strong>DIGITAL FINGERPRINTING<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The issuance of a passport requires the physical presence of the applicant at this Consulate in Detroit in order to acquire his\/her digital fingerprints.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Applicants under the age of 12 are exempt from digital fingerprinting.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Other reasons for exemption from fingerprinting are documented permanent or pathological disability, which must be proved through a Medical Certification letter issued by a local physician, hospital, etc., or evident disability or deformity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3.\u00a0<a name=\"documents\"><\/a><strong>DOCUMENTS TO SUBMIT (ON THE DAY OF THE APPOINTMENT) AND BOOKING YOUR APPOINTMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PLEASE ARRIVE AT YOUR APPOINTMENT PREPARED WITH ALL OF YOUR DOCUMENTS SIGNED. BRING ORIGINALS AND\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 PHOTOCOPIES AS REQUESTED BELOW, MONEY ORDER COMPLETED, AND ENVELOPE STAMPED AND ADDRESSED.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Please fill out the request forms before the appointment and review your application material to make sure that you have all the necessary documents.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The appointment can be scheduled exclusively on the\u00a0<strong>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prenot@mi<\/a>&#8221; website<\/strong>(click on &#8216;EN&#8217; on the top right corner for the English version), choosing the Passports Services.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/consdetroit.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/modulo-richiesta-passaporto-detroit-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Application Form<\/strong><\/a>, duly completed and signed;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Driver&#8217;s license<\/strong> or <strong>State ID<\/strong> to show the applicant&#8217;s residence in the Consular jurisdiction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adult applicants\u00a0with minor children\u00a0<\/strong>will need to sign, on the day of the appointment, a declaration stating that there are no legal impedment to the issuance of an Italian Passport;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Current Italian Passport<\/strong> (if you are applying for your first Italian passport,\u00a0or you also have US\u00a0citizenship,\u00a0please include a copy of the first two pages of your US passport);<\/li>\n<li>If you are a resident of the US, but not a citizen,\u00a0<strong>copy of US Green Card or of\u00a0valid US visa<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 (two) photographs<\/strong>, passport size (full-face,\u00a0<strong>must have a\u00a0WHITE BACKGROUND-NO GRAY, BLUE OR DARK BACKGROUND.\u00a0<\/strong>);<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>self-addressed, pre-stamped envelope<\/strong>\u00a0(EXPRESS MAIL). The passport\u00a0<strong>WILL NOT<\/strong>\u00a0be issued on the day of the appointment.\u00a0<strong>Please note that the Consulate is not responsible for delays or issues due to the Postal Service or to insufficient postage.\u00a0Please do not use UPS envelopes and\/or labels.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4.\u00a0<a name=\"minors\"><\/a><strong>ISSUANCE OF A PASSPORT FOR A MINOR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Please note that minors who are less than 12-year old are exempt from fingerprinting; therefore, requests for passports can be done exclusively by mail. Please include a self-addressed, pre-stamped envelope (EXPRESS MAIL),\u00a0if requesting a passport for a minor who is less than 12-year old).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To request a passport for a minor,\u00a0parents must have already submitted a request to register the minor\u2019s birth certificate to a Consulate\/Embassy abroad, or directly to a Comune in Italy. For information on how to register a birth certificate, please visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consdetroit.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/\"><strong>the Vital Records page<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of this Consulate website.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/consdetroit.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/modulo-richiesta-passaporto-detroit-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Application Form<\/strong><\/a>, duly completed by a parent with the personal data of the child. The passport\u00a0<strong>WILL NOT<\/strong>\u00a0be issued on the day of the appointment.\u00a0<strong>Please note that the Consulate is not responsible for delays or issues due to the Postal Service or to insufficient postage.\u00a0Please do not use UPS envelopes and\/or labels.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5.\u00a0<a name=\"cost\"><\/a><strong>COST AND PAYMENT METHOD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Passport fees are subject to change every 3 months. Until next June 30th, 2026, the cost for a passport is <strong>$138<\/strong>. The payment can<b>\u00a0<\/b>be made with a money order, payable to &#8220;Consolato d&#8217;Italia a Detroit&#8221; and submitted on the day of the appointment (for applications of minors who are less than 12 years old, the money order can be sent by mail along with the application). <strong>WE DO NOT ACEEPT PERSONAL CHECKS OR CREDIT\/DEBIT CARDS.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0<a name=\"stolen\"><\/a><strong>STOLEN OR LOST PASSPORT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the event of a stolen or lost passport, applicants must obtain a local police report. For any additional information, you are kindly requested to contact the Passport office of this Consulate by telephone at (313) 963-8560 ext. 116 or by\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:%20passaporti.detroit@esteri.it\"><strong>e-mail<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Italian citizens who are in an emergency situation (e.g. an Italian in transit for tourism who needs to leave the country within a very short period of time and whose passport has been lost or stolen), can obtain an <strong>ETD<\/strong> (Emergency Travel Document) at the Consulate. An ETD is valid only for the return trip to Italy or the country of legal residence (verified by AIRE registration). The ETD cannot be issued earlier than 5 days before the date of departure.<\/p>\n<p>In order to be issued this document, you must contact the Consulate by\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:%20passaporti.detroit@esteri.it\"><strong>e-mail<\/strong><\/a> to schedule\u00a0an appointment and come to the office with the following documentation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>report<\/strong>\u00a0of passport loss or theft filed with the competent\u00a0<strong>Police Authority<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 recent photos<\/strong>\u00a0(measures 3.5 x 4.0 cm, frontal, central face with white background, neutral expression);<\/li>\n<li><strong>another identity document<\/strong>\u00a0such as an ID card or driver\u2019s license (even in photocopy) or a photocopy of the stolen passport. In the absence of these documents, the office will have to make the appropriate identity checks before issuing the ETD;<\/li>\n<li><strong>travel document<\/strong>\u00a0(a copy of your flight reservation and itinerary).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>7.\u00a0<a name=\"CONSENT\"><\/a><strong>LETTER OF CONSENT FOR 14 YEAR OLD MINORS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Starting June 4, 2014, 14 year old minors who travel alone, without a parent, or accompanied by a guardian, must have a declaration released by the parents who have the authority to give consent to the issuance of a passport to that minor, according to article 3, letter a of the law 1185\/1967.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>request form<\/strong> to obtain this Statement can be downloaded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consdetroit.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Dichiarazione-Accompagnamento-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The declaration document is free and is issued by the Consulate for all minors residing in the jurisdiction upon express request from parents or those exercising parental authority pursuant art. 3, letter a) Act 1185\/1967<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To obtain this declaration, the<strong> request form<\/strong>\u00a0must be submitted together with:<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf copy of the parents\u2019 passports<br \/>\n\u25cf copy of the minor\u2019s passport<br \/>\n\u25cf copy of the passport of the accompanying person(s)<br \/>\n\u25cf Airline and flight data<\/p>\n<p>In the case of a parent who is a non-EU citizen, the signature must be authenticated by a Public Notary or in person at the Consulate, or in front of a Honorary Consul or Consular Correspondent.<\/p>\n<p>In the event that you wish to have the minor travel in the care of the transport company, it is suggested, before purchasing the air ticket, to check whether the airline accepts that the minor is in its care.<\/p>\n<p>Request may be sent to the Consulate by mail or email.
