Recognition of American educational credentials in Italy

PLEASE VERIFY THAT YOUR SCHOOL IS UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE CONSULATE OF ITALY IN DETROIT: MICHIGAN, OHIO, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, TENNESSEE BEFORE REQUESTING A DECLARATION OF VALUE.

TRANSCRIPTS MUST CLEARLY STATE:

  • STUDENT’S FULL NAME;
  • SCHOOL YEAR/S OF REFERENCE;
  • LAST YEAR OF SCHOOL COMPLETED;
  • FINAL GRADES;
  • DATE OF GRADUATION;
  • GRADING SCALE.

IMPORTANT: DECLARATIONS OF VALUE ARE USUALLY ISSUED IN ABOUT A MONTH, IF YOUR DOCUMENTS ARE COMPLETE.

DECLARATION OF VALUE


The procedure to obtain a Declaration of Value issued by schools located in this consular jurisdiction is the following:


Elementary School e Junior High School (I to VIII grade)

  1. application form for Declaration of Value;
  2. a certified copy of the Report card that the Principal or Registrar of the school signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State ;
  3. if the report card does not specify that the student was admitted to the following grade, the Principal will have to sign a letter stating the above and his signature must be notarized by a notary and legalized with an Apostille (DO NOT remove the Apostille from the original document. This will make the document null and void;
  4. Translation in Italian of the documents indicated above except for the Apostille. Please do not staple the translation to the original document. Translations in Italian must maintain grades as the appear in the original documents;
  5. Copy of passport;
  6. A prepaid and self addressed envelope (express Mail, UPS, or FEDEX) to return the original documents back to the applicant once they’ve been processed. Please note that the Consulate is not responsible for delays or issues due to the Postal Service or to insufficient postage.

 

High School (IX to XII grade)

  1. application form for Declaration of Value;
  2. a certified copy of DIPLOMA that the Principal or Registrar of the school signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  3. copy of 4 Year Transcript that the Principal or Registrar of the school signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State (DO NOT remove the Apostille from the original document. This will make the document null and void;
  4. if the report card does not specify that the student was admitted to the following grade, the Principal will have to sign a letter stating the above and his signature must be notarized and legalized with an Apostille;
  5. translation in Italian of the documents indicated above, except for the Apostille. Please do not staple the translation to the original document. Translations in Italian must maintain grades as they appear in the original documents;
  6. copy of passport;

"Exchange Students"


Italian exchange students who after the year abroad re-enter the school in Italy must present to the Consulate the following documents:

  1. application form for Declaration of Value;
  2. a certified copy of DIPLOMA that the Principal or Registrar of the school signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State (DO NOT remove the Apostille from the original document. This will make the document null and void);
  3. a certified copy of Report Card that the Principal or Registrar of the school signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  4. a certified copy of the attendance certificate that the Principal or Registrar of the school signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  5. honorary diploma (if issued);
  6. letter of the organizer of the exchange Program and, if in English, translation in Italian;
  7.  translation in Italian of the documents indicated above. Please do not staple the translation to the original document. Translations must maintain grades as the appear in the original documents;
  8. copy of passport;

Please note: students who obtained a Diploma in a secondary school in Italy must present a copy. Find out whether the Italian University requires the description of courses. In this case often it is sufficient to download the Catalogue. Make sure that the courses match those listed in the transcripts.


RECOGNITION OF ACADEMIC DEGREE


Italian and foreign citizens who obtained a degree in a College or University located in this consular jurisdiction can request a Declaration of Value to this Office to have it recognized by an Italian University. The application must be presented to the President of the academic institution. It is important to make sure that the University offers courses similar to the ones completed in the US.


ASSOCIATE DEGREE

  1. application form for Declaration of Value;
  2. a certified copy of DIPLOMA of ASSOCIATE DEGREE that the Registrar of the Community College signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State (DO NOT remove the Apostille from the original document. This will make the document null and void);
  3. a certified copy of transcript that the Registrar signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  4. a certified copy of DIPLOMA of HIGH SCHOOL that the Principal or Registrar of the school signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  5. a certified copy of 4 Year Transcript that the Principal or Registrar of the high school signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  6. Translation in Italian of the documents indicated above, except for the Apostille. Please do not staple the translation to the original document. Translations must maintain grades as the appear in the original documents;

  3. a certified copy of transcripts that the Registrar signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  4. a certified copy of DIPLOMA and of the transcripts of BACHELOR Degree that the Registrar of the College or University signed before a Notary Public and legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  5. a certified copy of HIGH SCHOOL Diploma and of the 4 Year Transcript that the Principal or Registrar of the school signed before a Notary Public legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  6. Translation in Italian of the documents indicated above. Please do not staple the translation to the original document. Translations must maintain grades as the appear in the original documents;
  7. copy of passport;

  2. a certified copy of DIPLOMA of Ph.D. that the Registrar of the University signed before a Notary Public, legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State (DO NOT remove the Apostille from the original document. This will make the document null and void); ;
  3. a certified copy of DIPLOMA and of transcripts of MASTER Degree that the Registrar of the University signed before a Notary Public, legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  4. a certified copy of BACHELOR DIPLOMA and copy of Official Transcripts, that the Registrar of the attended academic institution signed before a Notary Public, legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  5. a certified copy of HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA and copy of school report (4 Year Transcript), that the Principal or the Registrar of the attended school signed before a Notary Public, legalized with the Apostille of the Secretary of State;
  6. Translation in Italian of the documents mentioned above. Please do not staple the translation to the original document. Translations must report the grades exactly how they appear in original;
  7. copy of the Passport;
  8. A prepaid and self addressed envelope (express Mail, UPS, or FEDEX) to return the original documents back to the applicant once they’ve been processed. Please note that the Consulate is not responsible for delays or issues due to the Postal Service or to insufficient postage.

Please note: it is necessary to verify if the Italian University asks for the description of the curriculum relative to the attended courses. In that case, the attended courses must be indicated and must correspond with the ones in the “transcript”. In presence of qualifications obtained in Italy, it is necessary to show a photocopy of it.
